Monash Medical Centre

Monash Medical Centre was experiencing a significant water leak for a considerable time. This posed a major problem for a major Melbourne Medical Centre, open 24 hours a day, as it is imperative that the water supply is not disrupted.

The Medical Centre had already spent significant money and resources on trying to locate the leak. The hospital staff had reached the end of their options and a decision had been made to give up on trying to find the leak and replace the complete water supply line. Capital had been allocated for an estimated repair cost of between $50,000 and $150,000.

Total Fire & Water enquired about the problem while carrying out CCTV on their sewer drains.

On surveying the site it was found that escaping water had filled footings in the under croft and significant water was running out of a nearby hillside, onto a staff car park. The network of pipes in the general vicinity of these areas meant the leak could be anywhere within a 7,000 square metre area. The site also suffered from poor plumbing design, which didn't allow for the isolating of pipe sections, as supply would be lost to vital areas of the hospital.

The Medical Centre has no shutdown period and carries out dialysis 24 hours a day. The water pipes were over 4 metres deep and previous leak detection contractors had failed to find the leak due to depth, constant noise levels from heavy water use and plant room pump motors.

Total Fire & Water offered to solve the problem using our latest equipment - the Eureka2 leak correlator.

With the unit's noise suppression and filtering features, the leak was quickly and successfully located, with excavation conducted the same day. The repair was carried out with a repair band and no disruption to supply occurred.

Monash Medical Centre was delighted that the final cost was under $4000 and the total process was able to be completed within 24 hours.
